
Dr Waqaar Shah is a physician and healthcare leader who has worked continuously in the NHS for over 30 years ago, garnering significant experience, insights and acumen in patient care, social determinants of wellbeing, and systems executive functions.
Dr Shah is the chairman of the Type 2 Diabetes Guideline Committee at the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE). He has also chaired other guideline committees at NICE including Long COVID, Prostate Cancer, Glaucoma, Neonatal Infection, and Macular Degeneration.
He is a Primary Care Clinical Director in the NHS, where he leverages expertise to develop greater systems working, to reduce health inequity, and to augment the offer to patients.
Having worked in the past as an ophthalmologist for several years, Dr Shah is now a Clinical Director for Ophthalmology at NHS London where he provides leadership to the elective care recovery programme. Dr Shah focuses on improving quality and clinical outcomes for patients across the whole pathway. He has an interest in non-clinical factors that impact quality of life, such as the built environment, housing and air quality.
